The above painting is a several hundred year old parody of Nehan-zu, which is a large and colorful painting in which the scene of Buddha's passage into Nirvana is depicted. Instead of Buddha, Ariwara no Narihira was dead and laying on the bed and he was surrounded by weeping women. Ariwara no Narihira was commonly known as a womanizing playboy in the ancient time. The following painting is one of original Nehan-zu.
